8×16 Portable Buildings: FAQs

Do I need a Permit for an 8×16 Shed?

For an 8×16 shed, you’ll likely need to get a shed permit. Many areas require a shed permit for any shed over 120 square feet, and an 8×16 shed is 128 square feet, so it’s required.

If you live in North Dakota, please check out our shed permit guide for that state for more info.

How Much gravel do I need for an 8×16 Shed Foundation?

An 8×16 shed foundation typically requires approximately 1.89 cubic yards of gravel. Since we recommend making your foundation a foot longer and wider than the shed on all sides, you will need a pad that measures 9×17.

We also recommend a depth of at least 4″. These calculations assume that your site is level. If you are installing the shed on a slope, you may need more gravel. For more information on site preparation, please refer to our site prep page.

How many square feet is an 8×16 shed?

The total footprint of an 8×16 shed is 128 square feet. However, it’s important to note that the usable interior space will be slightly less than this due to the thickness of the walls.

To calculate the usable floor space, subtract approximately 5″ from each side of the interior dimensions. This accounts for the wall studs (3.5″) and the sheathing and siding on the outside (up to 1.5″).

Thus, to perform the calculation you should multiply 7 feet 7 inches by 15 feet 7 inches, yielding an estimated interior space of approximately 105.5 Square Feet.
